September is here and this means that summer is officially over for students everywhere. Some students in America start school in late July or August, but by the day after Labor Day every child in America is back on campus where they will spend the year learning essential content, academic and social skills, time management and much, much more! As a career educator, I love school. I love seeing the light bulb come on when a student begins to understand a difficult concept. I love watching students grow in confidence as they become more proficient in a subject or master a skill. I love helping students discover what they are good at and what their future career path will be. I love education and its power to change lives, to change the world!
While I am a huge proponent of education in the traditional sense, I have to be honest about how I really feel. Reading, writing and arithmetic are important subjects for success in basic living and future careers, but in the end, the mastery of these won’t directly alter a person from the inside out. Being a top scholar might help a person make a lot of money but it won’t change a person’s eternity! However, there is another type of education that can truly transform a person; this is a Biblical education. The type of education that is needed more than ever is a committed focus to the study of God’s word! No other type of education has the power to change lives which will in turn change the world!
By studying God’s word, we get to know God better. As we study, we are able to learn to discern what is truth and what is a lie which is essential for healthy relationships. As we study we are able to understand what Jesus has done for us and how to live in the power of the Holy Spirit! Every problem we face, every question we have, every fear we encounter, every struggle we need to overcome is addressed in God’s word!
The word of God should be our daily nourishment, our fuel for living. As we devote ourselves to a study of God’s word, we will grow as disciples, and this is our calling: to be disciples and make disciples!
Are you ready to go back to school? Grab your Bible and join a group committed to the study of God’s word! The Bible is the only “textbook” we need to learn how to live freely and wholly in this broken world!
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” II Timothy 3:16
